In the paper a possibility is considered to use a linear
gas-filled quadrupole trap as a pulsed source with ion extraction in the
direction of the quadrupole axis. Based on calculation it is shown that such
a source allows one to form an ion pulse of several nanosecond width with
the energy spread of several per cent, and thus it can be used as a storing
source for multireflection time-of-flight mass analyzers with a large separation
time. Two types of sources are compared, with extraction by pulling ions
and with an additional push. The space charge ef-fect in the source is investigated.
