The history of emergence and development of mass spectral analysis and its two variations-elemental and isotopic mass spectrometry is briefly outlined. Their main common features and differences are pointed out. The requirements on the instrumentation for their realization are considered and main trends in mass spectrometric instrumentation are analyzed.
